Metallurgy

'Metallurgy' traditionally refers to the art of working with metals, comprehending the whole process of separating them from other matters in the ore, smelting, refining, and parting them. Modern metallurgists have an understanding of modern scientific techniques so 'metallurgy' today also refers to the science and technology of metals.

The word metal is from the Greek metallon which has the same meaning as both 'mine' and 'metal', this probably comes from the Greek word metallan meaning 'to search for.' Which i think it appropriate for modern metallurgists who often spend their time searching for the right combination of elements and heat treatment.
