Maximise volume fraction that transforms to bainitic ferrite
- Control T0 curve by alloying
- Lower temperature transformation
Notes:
The properties are achieved in part by maximising the volume fraction that transforms to bainite, by controlling the T0 curve by alloying, and by low temperature transformation.
Carbon is added to control MS, BS and time to the start of transformation
Silicon retards cementite formation giving a carbide free microstructure on transformation.
Manganese and chromium are added for hardenability.
Molybdenum is added to avoid embrittlement on tempering.
Vanadium is added to control the austenite grain size.
