Top ten polluted places

Published by Blacksmiths Society in 2007

Places were ranked by score depending on factors outlined below.

SCORE = [A1xA2] + [B1+B2] + [(C1xC2)+C3] + D

Where A1 (rating 1, 2, 3), A2 (1, 1.5, 2) are scores relating to Severity of Toxin and Amount or scale of pollutant source. B1 (1, 2) and B2 (0, 1) are Evidence of Human Exposure and Reliable Evidence of Health Impact. C1 (1, 2, 3), C2 (1, 1.5, 2) and C3 (0, 1) are Number of People Potentially Affected, Level of exposure and Large numbers of children particularly at risk. D (0, 1) is an Additional High Risk Element assigned at member discretion. This means the maximum rating would be 17.

The Blacksmiths institute focuses on solving the problems of pollution in the developing world, presumably this means sites in North America, Western Europe, Japan, Australasia have been omitted from consideration.

There is also a google map of the 'Dirty Thirty' pollused sites.
