Installing fonts is usually a matter of just installing a package with the software management tools, if the font isn't available in this way it may be easiest to add it manually
There is a previous howto for installing fonts here: xfree4 howto, in a way that the xserver understands.
However if you simply copy the fonts into that location they may be found by your font server, this means as root user you have to copy the font to /usr/local/share/fonts/ or create a directory in that location and put the font there.
